Valentino Rossi believes he is much closer to team-mate Jorge Lorenzo at the Majorcan's 'home' MotoGP round in Barcelona than previous races, insisting he can be competitive in Sunday's race.

Coming off seventh and eighth qualifying positions in Le Mans and Mugello, Rossi set himself the target of starting from the front two rows in Montmeló in a bid to halt Lorenzo's ever-increasing momentum.

Yet on Saturday the 36-year old qualified for Q2 by the skin of his teeth, his final lap in FP3 a 'risky' strategy but enough to bump him into the top ten.

Rossi once again left it late to qualify seventh after positing a time of 1m 41.058s, putting him just over half a second slower than the pole position time, set by Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro.

Although the extremely fast qualifying time has yet to arrive, Rossi believed the pace he showed in FP4, in which he finished fourth, demonstrates definite potential for the race.

“Practice was quite positive,” said Rossi, leading the championship by six points. “From yesterday we had a good balance, especially the pace. FP4 was the most interesting because everyone is trying their race pace. I was fourth and feeling confident.

“I was able to do good lap times. After for the qualifying I'm not satisfied 100 percent because I have the potential with the bike to make the top five and start from the second row. Unfortunately I wasn't strong enough to make the perfect lap.

“In the end I have to start seventh. It's not fantastic but it's not too bad. Also, because the guy with the right pace starts from third position [Lorenzo], fourth [Marquez] and sixth position [Pedrosa], seventh [is] not so far.

“I think Jorge has the best pace. Also both of the Hondas are not so bad but this time I am more close and I think I can be more competitive for the race.”

The Suzuki pairing of Espargaro and Maverick Viñales were undoubtedly the surprise of the session, placing first and second, and Rossi admitted he is unsure how the GSX-RR pairing will fare in the second half of Sunday's race.

“I think nobody knows. I am quite optimistic for the Suzuki. They make an incredible lap time with the super soft but the pace with the medium is good. Especially Aleix is fast.

“I think they can stay in the first group for the first half of the race. For the second half nobody know. Or Suzuki don't know. Also the speed on the straight, it looks like Suzuki has improved. If it is fast they can keep the slipstream and can stay on top.”

Asked why he had waited until the last possible moment to set his fastest lap in FP3, which narrowly put him through to Q2, Rossi joked, “We make a good strategy. We simulate the qualifying and I do the lap time on the last lap. We have forty seconds in advance so we have another forty seconds to use!

“Apart from the joke, it's risky. Now it's like this. Everyone is so fast and Saturday morning is already pre-qualifying. Staying in the top ten is not easy. We have a lot of very fast bikes. Also Suzuki here with the super soft so it's not so bad. A good result.”

When judging his pace in FP4, Rossi was able to eleven laps in the mid-to-high 1m 42s while Lorenzo, using worn tyres, set six. According to the Italian 'another step' is needed to consistently challenge in Sunday's race.

“It will be very important now to improve and make another step for tomorrow, to try and improve the set-up for tomorrow morning. Also the start will be important like always.”

Sono messo senza dubbio meglio che al Mugello”, Valentino Rossi sgombra subito il campo ai dubbi. E’ in terza fila, ma questa volta ha nel polso il passo per stare con i migliori. Neanche a Barcellona è riuscito a fare la differenza in qualifica, “colpa anche mia, la moto aveva il potenziale per permettermi di stare nei primi 5”, ma in gara potrà dire la sua.

Sei soddisfatto a metà?

“Non al 100% per come sono andate le qualifiche, non ho fatto un giro perfetto. La settima posizione non è fantastica, ma neanche così malvagia, quelli con il ritmo migliori non sono troppe posizioni davanti a me. Però sono contento in ottica gara, ho fatto segnare tempi interessanti anche con gomme che avevano 20 giri sulle spalle”.

Chi è l’uomo da battere?

“Lorenzo ha il passo migliore ma io posso essere competitivo, c’è ancora qualche particolare da migliorare”.

E le Suzuki?

“Sono state incredibili in qualifica e sembrano avere un buon passo, credo che nella prima metà di gara possano stare con i migliori. Penso invece che nessuno sappia quale sia il potenziale nel finale, anche se il nuovo motore gli ha dato la velocità necessaria per restare in scia nei rettilinei. Voglio fare anche i complimenti a Davide Brivio, con cui ho lavorato molto, ha fatto un bel lavoro manageriale scegliendo piloti e gente giusti. Nessuno si aspettava di vedere le due Suzuki davanti a tutti dopo 7 gare e anche con un buon ritmo”.

Quali sono le tue previsioni per la gara?

“Difficile dirlo, come ho detto Jorge è il favorito ma le due Honda saranno molto veloci nei primi giri, a occhio direi che saremo io, Lorenzo, Marquez e Pedrosa a giocarci la gara. Bisognerà vedere cosa faranno le Suzuki e le Ducati, anche se a oggi sembrano più lente”.

Questo regolamento ha favorito le Case più in difficoltà cosa ne pensi?

“Conta poco il mio pensiero, non sono io a decidere (ride). Sicuramente è un bene per il campionato, avere Ducati e Suzuki competitive è un bene ma dall’altra parte le qualifiche sono molto più complicate per noi e la Honda. L’ultimo turno di libere è diventato una sorta di prova generale di qualifiche e non è semplice stare nei 10”.

Però sembri ottimista per la gara…

“Mi sento bene e ho confermato le buone sensazioni di ieri, sono soddisfatto di questa giornata. Battere Lorenzo? sarebbe bello provarci”.

Jorge LorenzoLo è anche Jorge Lorenzo, che è riuscito a prendersi un posto in prima fila. I rivali lo temono, perché sanno che se riuscisse a scappare riprenderlo potrebbe essere impossibile, come capitato nelle ultime tre gare. “Abbiamo lavorato più del solito sul setup della moto su questa pista, ma siamo riusciti a progredire costantemente soprattutto per tenere un buon ritmo quando le gomme incominciano a calare. Abbiamo ancora un piccolo margine per migliorare, ma si stratta solo di dettagli”, spiega.

Partirai dietro alle due Suzuki.

“Mi è capitato di seguirle e devo riconoscere che hanno fatto un gran lavoro, la loro moto è molto stabile in curva e ha una buona trazione in uscita, anche se in gara sarà tutto più complicato. Però anche Honda è migliorata e Ducati ha fatto un grande passo avanti in inverno. Anche noi siamo progrediti ma bisogna continuare così perché in MotoGP nessuno dorme”.

Rossi ha faticato ancora in qualifica.

“Valentino è un pilota da gara, nella sua carriera ha conquistato più vittorie che pole position. La M1 è una moto che permette di essere molto consistenti in gara e lui sarà uno dei favoriti per la vittoria. Rossi per me è il primo rivale, quindi avere qualche pilota fra me e lui non mi dispiace. Meglio anche che ci siano le Suzuki davanti, piuttosto che Honda o Ducati”.
