2004 250cc world championship runner-up Sebastian Porto signed off his pre-season preparations by setting the pace during testing at Jerez this week – and is confident he will be in title contention from the opening event of the 2005 season, at the same circuit, on April 10.

Here the Repsol Aprilia rider talks about his pre-season preparations, his rivals for the 2005 title, his assessment of the class rookies and much more...

Q:
What’s your assessment of your pre-season?

Sebastian Porto:
Very positive. I’m leaving Jerez very satisfied after having improved the times set on the first day, because we’ve been lapping very fast. The feeling on the bike is getting better every day; since we got it, it’s been constantly improving. We’ve made the jump we needed as regards the chassis, although I think that there are still a couple of things to improve on the engine.

I’m happy, because everything we, as a team, said that had to be improved was heard by Aprilia and they have been working in that direction; we’ve been able to feel the results. There are still some details left, but we’re on the right path. On a personal level, this has been my best preseason. It’s my second year with the team, the factory bike.... that’s why this year has been different. It wasn’t something new, so we were able to start from a better position, because we already have a larger experience.

Q:
What do you think about your closest rivals, such as Dani Pedrosa, Alex De Angelis or Randy De Puniet?

Sebastian Porto:
We’ll be able to see everybody’s level once the world championship has started. Now it’s just too early to draw any conclusion. However, we’ve been able to see who’s been faster during the preseason.

Our reference is always Pedrosa; he’s the world champion and he’s being very fast. Surely he’ll be the toughest rival despite the little problems he’s been having. But I’ve seen them all very strong. De Puniet is doing a good job and you can see that he’s adapted well to the team, and De Angelis is being very strong as well.

Q:
And the class rookies?

Sebastian Porto:
They’ll contribute to a more difficult and contested championship. Barberá, Lorenzo and Dovizioso are combative riders that have shown a progression during the preseason.

They are fast riders who have already proven that they’re able to set good times, although we’ll have to wait and see how they respond during the race, because they haven’t got the rhythm of the class yet. I’m sure that they’ll do a very good job and it’ll be an interesting battle.

The one I personally see with more chances is probably the current 125cc world champion, Dovizioso, a very consistent rider.

Q:
How do you see Aprilia relative to Honda?

Sebastian Porto:
We’ve improved significantly. We’ve probably made our biggest leap with the chassis. As regards the engine, we’ve been receiving parts, but we’re improving slowly. From my point of view, we still need the engine to be a bit more competitive, but in general terms it’s been an important jump.
I don’t know what the others have done, but it’s clear that the Honda has improved and is still a good bike. What is happening now, is that there’s not only one Honda but many of them in the front. That will make the championship more hard-fought.

Q:
The next time we’ll see you on the track will be at first race of the 2005 season, what are your expectations for the event?

Sebastian Porto:
I feel very well. This is my second year, I’m calm and I think that I have many chances to be fighting for the title. We must try to work well, following the line of last year and continue evolving the bike as we’ve been doing. If we keep this regularity, as we’ve been doing during the preseason, the championship will be easier for us. But we have to work on it and take it easy, because it’s going to be a long, very long way.

I feel that I have big chances. This year will be different because, as I told you, we start with a larger experience. Last year I knew that I was getting a factory bike, a good bike, but I didn’t really know what I was going to find. I had to adapt to it and deep in the inside I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it. This year is different, I have the bike, the confidence and the experience.

Q:
What are your plans from now until the start of the season?

Sebastian Porto:
Well, I’m going to relax because it’s been a very long and demanding pre-season. We’ve been lapping very fast on all of the circuits. But the season will be even tougher. I won’t have time to travel to Argentina, so I’ll stay around here to rest, looking forward to the first grand prix.

Dani Pedrosa is a small man with a big target on his back this season; the Spaniard is attempting to defend his 250cc world championship - and tipped by many to be a future MotoGP star. As such, his class rivals would like nothing more than to boost there own value by defeating him.

Here the Telefonica Movistar Honda rider talks about his pre-season preparations, his main rivals for 2005, how much of a threat the class rookies will be and much more...

Q:
What’s your assessment of your preseason?

Dani Pedrosa:
In the end, we’re leaving Jerez having solved the carburetion and suspension problems we’d been having both in Barcelona and here and that had delayed our working plan at the beginning.

We finally managed to complete everything we had planned and that’s positive. It’s been a long preseason, compared to the one I had last year and I would assess it as good and productive. The other riders are being very fast for the moment, but we’re happy with our progression and performance.

Q:
Who do you think your main rivals will be for 2005?

Dani Pedrosa:
It’s obvious that Porto is very strong, but we also have to consider De Puniet and De Angelis, as well as those riders who have come up from the 125cc class. They’ve all been lapping very fast. Both the riders and the bikes are working very hard.

Q:
You’ve mentioned the class rookies, what sort of role do you think they will play?

Dani Pedrosa:
They’re getting better every day and they’re already setting fast times. We also have to consider that Barberá, Lorenzo and Dovizioso are Honda riders as well and that Stoner has also been very fast here in Jerez.

But we’ll have to wait and see how they do it in the race. They still have to get the pace, although we’ll surely see them on the podium more than once. It will certainly be a hard-fought and complicated year.
Q:
The season will begin in two weeks, what are your expectations for Jerez?

Dani Pedrosa:
It’s hard to say, although the fact that the first race is going to be in the same place as the first tests may give us some hints. It’s going to be a much contended race, I’m sure that many of us will be in the front and we’re all eager to start. The last times set have been very fast, so we only need to know how the fans will react, although I’m sure that they’re going to be excellent, as always.

Q:
What are your plans between now and the first race?

Dani Pedrosa:
There’s not much time left before the grand prix in Jerez and the pre-season has been hard, so we’re going to take a rest and work out a bit. With so many tests and travels, we haven’t been able to work on the physical part as much as we would have liked.
